Why are we still Blogging?

by

Hi friends, I’m Michelle and I am a third year IT/Creative Industries students. I am a freelance graphics designer and a part time make-up artist at Benefit Cosmetics therefore, interested in all things pretty.

Why am I blogging?

Apart from updating my blog weekly for the INB346 requirements, I would love to share my thoughts with the digital community. This is my first ever blog where I will be personally experiencing strategies and techniques of blogging first hand where I will be expressing my own opinion along with academic approaches on various subjects.

Readership and Useful Posts

Blogging has been rapidly changing over the years from the mid ‘90’s online journals sprouting from a self-focused mindset to microblogging services such as Twitter, Facebook and many other networks. (Hannan, 2014) Now that blogging has developed into popular and specialised businesses, the concept of blogs is becoming unfashionable in the online community.

However, popular blogs still exist obviously for their great content but that isn’t all. Below are three tips on how to build a thriving blog:

  1. Sharing your blog article on social networks: Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Reddit are some of the many options for sharing your blog with the many users already connected to the online community.
  2. Include visuals and videos: 90% of information transmitted to the brain are visuals where they are processed 60,000 faster in the brain than text. (Sibley, 2012) It is also a powerful way to get readers connected.
  3. Sharing. Yes, more sharing: sharing your blog to any entity mentioned. Send them a link and alert them – it is very likely that they will be interested in reading your post and promoting it as well.

Those are three of many tips on how to obtain readership and creating useful posts.

Favourite Blog

As a designer and make-up artist, one of my favourite blogs to read is a personal blog by Shannon Harris. She is the #1 most subscribed and viewed, how-to and style category in New Zealand, Youtube. Her blog consists of photos, video information, swatches and reviews which are highly informative and written beautifully.

Shannon’s blog ticks all the boxes on building and maintaining a thriving blog. She shares her posts on social networks, includes many colourful visuals and videos and networks with all the brands that she writes about including NYX Cosmetics and Chi Chi cosmetics. As a very popular Youtuber, she shows personality which every reader can relate to.
